We are fortunate to be the custodians of Graciosa Byron Bay, an iconic house – over 100 years old – set high on a hill overlooking the town of Bangalow. In that time, Graciosa has seen many incarnations, all of which have weaved into the soul of the house and the land and added to the energy you feel on the property today. Originally a dairy farm, Graciosa spent some time as a horse stud and cattle farm before it’s current life as a family home and holiday and event retreat.
The house has been named after the island in the Azores (off the coast of Portugal) from where our ancestral grandfather Alfonso was born and later stowed away on a cargo ship to find himself, months later, on the shores of Australia. He made his way along the eastern seaboard and eventually found himself in the Northern Rivers – where he set up camp and eventually a home. The home was called Graciosa. Our home, Graciosa Byron Bay – pays homage to his adventurous spirit. We like to think of our move from Sydney to the hills behind Byron Bay is our own adventure – connecting the heart, mind and spirit. The word Graciosa has a number of meanings – depending on the context. Gracious is one translation. The other, is ‘a funny situation’. Anyone who knows Graciosa knows that it possesses a grace and a little bit of quirk.
The farmhouse at Graciosa Byron Bay has undergone extensive restoration during our family’s 10-year tenure. The interior has been sensitively designed to capture all of the innate elements of the property. The house possesses a kind of majesty but is relaxed and comfortable at heart, with little pretense ensuring time spent here is peaceful. The interiors, a mix of colour, whimsy, function and comfort encapsulate this essence. Graciosa been showcased in magazines, both in Australia and internationally such as Inside Out, Country Style, Home Beautiful, Real Living, Elle Decoration UK, Elle Decor Denmark, Marie Claire and Bolig Liv. Graciosa Byron Bay has also been featured in a number of interior design books.
Every person who steps foot onto Graciosa Byron Bay is impressed by the energy here. Graciosa Byron Bay is a place where you can step out of your real life for a while and recoonect with the most magical parts of yourself. We invite you to create your own story here.
If you’ve taken a drive along Bangalow Road then you’ll know the Treehouse. It has iconic status amongst the locals and travellers alike. A local sculptor, who had been moonlighting as a builder on the property for a time, created the treehouse in the stoic old fig tree overhanging the road. He, using objects found around the farm, formed and built the treehouse from whatever was found on any given day. The result is a magical space that has been the backdrop of many a marriage proposal. We like to think of the treehouse as our very own guardhouse. A kind of Alice In Wonderland set, where, if you’re lucky, you may just catch a glimpse of our fairy guards! Each ensuring that Graciosa maintains it’s beauty and majesty for all to enjoy.
